This film is brilliantly acted with strong performances from Matthew McConaughey and Hugh Grant. The rather unconventional visionary Guy Ritchie has been stuck in a Hollywood rut for the last ten years, ever since he committed to big budget, visual effects heavy films, such as Sherlock Holmes, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and this year's underwhelming live action version of the classic Disney, Aladdin. The British director goes back to his roots with the highly entertaining gangster film 'The Gentlemen' and surprisingly nails every bold punch he makes.
Although his 'Aladdin' made a ton of money, critically the film was a disaster. His return to the underground world of bribery, drugs, money-laundering and blood-covered-class, is as refreshing as it is entertaining. The film's script deals with two storylines at the same time, almost breaking the fourth wall with a tongue-in-cheek commentary on today's Hollywood and how big movie studios are hungry for some original yet overly mainstream basic content, to lure people into cinemas to go watch their films.
Beginning with a quick flash forward that ends with a bang and a pair of brains splattered all over a pint and a pickled egg at a typical British pub, we dial it back to a quiet evening at Raymond's (Charlie Hunnam) cosy house. When private investigator and intrusive sly fox, Fletcher (Hugh Grant) turns up at his house, he explains he has been keeping an eye on the different gangs around town for quite a while. Narrating most of the film and making some stuff up to make things more spectacular for himself, he reads his mostly finished movie script to Raymond, bribing him into funding his little project, or else he'll leak all the information he has on Raymond's boss Mickey Pearson (Matthew McConaughey) a white trash American expat who has build himself a marijuana empire.
Mickey is tired of the business and is trying to sell his highly profitable company to a dynasty of Oklahoma billionaires. But when one of the underground weed-plantations gets raided by a group of British lads, filming the entire thing and posting it on YouTube as some sort of fight- music-video, it quickly becomes clear some mobster bosses haven't been exactly honest about their meetings and loyalty towards each other. This is when the real war begins - while keeping it classy.
Ritchie co-wrote the story with Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies, who haven't written anything before. The idea of the entire film is prodigious, but the screenplay and dialogue is simply unprecedented by Ritchie himself, bringing joke after joke, while taking you on a thrilling ride full of genius twists and new ways to incorporate classic gangster cinema - Ritchie-style. Composer Christopher Benstead is debuting his very first score for a feature film with The Gentlemen, and knows exactly how to set the tone and drive it up to an eleven. A promising talent that won't go unnoticed.
Ritchie introduces new characters throughout the film, keeping the audience on the edge of their seat, surprising them with actual cinema, getting the best angles and money shots, thanks to his cinematographer Alan Stewart (Aladdin. When adding layer after layer to the story, going deeper into the underground scene, adding a new protagonist who's into human trafficking and Mickey's queen and wife, the cockney Cleopatra, Rosalind (Michelle Dockery) who owns a sanctuary for the ladies as some sort of business coverup to her husband's weed-empire, it becomes clear every role has a purpose and there are no extras involved in this story. One of the best acting ensembles in recent cinema history, and a welcome reminder from McConnaughey as to why he won an Oscar in the first place. But it's Colin Farrell (as the highly entertaining 'Coach' and Hugh Grant who steal every scene they're in with their remarkable wit that'll for sure land them some BAFTA-nominations.
'The Gentlemen' is a ruthless first-class kick in the teeth. Do not let the failures of Ritchie's recent career choices scare you, as this is actually one of the best films he's ever made. Who knew Guy Ritchie could raise the bar not just for himself, but for everyone out there trying to brush him off as a has been. 2020 is off to a great start.

Sony Classics has released the trailer for The Burnt Orange Heresy, which features Mick Jagger in a supporting role alongside Claes Bang, Elizabeth Debicki and Donald Sutherland. Based on Charles Willeford's crime novel of the same name, The Burnt Orange Heresy centers around art critic James Figueras (Bang) and Berenice Hollis (Debicki), who are hosted by art collector Joseph Cassidy (Jagger) at his estate on Italy's Lake Como. Cassidy convinces the couple to steal a painting by the reclusive artist Jerome Debney (Sutherland). After having premiered at the Venice Film Festival last September, the film was also shown at the Toronto International Film Festival. It will open in Los Angeles and New York on March 6. Shortly after the screenings, Director Giuseppe Capotondi revealed that it could be Jagger's last-ever movie. “We heard that he was looking for a last film to make and so we sent the script, " he said. "He liked it and I went to London to see him. It was very unnerving before going in, but he’s just a gentle soul. He wanted to do it and then when he was on set, it was just like any other director and actor. He wasn't Mick Jagger from the Rolling Stones. It's working with the legend, but the good thing is that he doesn't act like one. ” “Obviously, before he comes on set, you're like, ‘Whoa, I might faint when I see him or something, ’" Bang added. Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin’s film documenting climber Alex Honnold’s historic rope-free ascent of El Capitan's Freerider in Yosemite took home the statue for Best Documentary Feature at this year’s Academy Awards. Free Solo follows Honnold as he prepares for the climb and deals with “the circus” of being the sport’s most recognizable figure, someone who’s been living mostly out of a van suddenly having a camera following his every move for months on end. It’s that insight into Honnold that forces the audience to confront bigger questions about life, death, and risk-taking and make this much more than just another climbing flick. In an interview with Outside in September 2018, Vasarhelyi described the film as a story about “this kid who is so scared of talking to other people that it was easier for him to climb alone, with no ropes, than to ask for a partner. I feel like we all have something in our lives like that. It was really important to see Alex’s eyes before he did it. What did his eyes look like the morning he set off? ” That approach goes a long way toward explaining why Vasarhelyi, Chin and Honnold were on stage together accepting the Oscar in February. One version is the director-for-hire, the successful filmmaker behind such box office successes as Disney’s blockbuster live-action reimaging of the animated classic “Aladdin” in 2019, the contemporary updating of “Sherlock Holmes” starring Robert Downey Jr. in 2009, and its 2011 sequel “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. ” Another version of Guy Ritchie is the radical revisionist filmmaking auteur behind such resounding box office failures as the 2002 remake of the Italian masterpiece “Swept Away, ” the 2015 adaptation of the classic 1960s television series “The Man from U. N. C. L. E., ” and “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, ” the muddled and grimy 2017 retelling of the Camelot legend. But first the enterprising Pearson needs to defend his extensive business interests from hostile takeover attempts from an array of colorful international criminal organizations. Unfortunately, it all sounds funnier than it is. The movie is about as dramatically viable as any of Steven Soderbergh’s “Ocean’s Eleven” pictures, but at other times resembles nothing more than a combination of 1995’s “Get Shorty” and 1960’s “The Grass is Greener” (no pun intended), filtered through the sensibilities of Quentin Tarantino. With style to spare but little heart and no soul, “The Gentlemen” relies instead on the considerable amount of goodwill generated by its megawatt cast of Hollywood superstars. “The Gentlemen” includes performances by Matthew McConaughey as the American marijuana baron Mickey Pearson, a bearded and genteel Charlie Hunnam as Pearson’s capable assistant Raymond, rising matinee idol Henry Golding as the unsympathetic Chinese criminal underboss Dry Eye, Michelle Dockery of “Downton Manor” fame as Pearson’s business executive wife Rosalind, Colin Farrell as an Irish gangleader with designs on Pearson’s empire, and Hugh Grant in an atypical role as a seedy and smarmy private investigator who fits the pieces of the plot together with a notion to sell the story to a Hollywood studio. January 25, 2020 Format: Prime Video In The Gentlemen, Mickey Pearce (Matthew McConaughey), the head of a large British marijuana ring, is planning to retire and sell off his business. However, things go awry when his empire is threatened. This was a fun film. This is directed and written by Guy Ritchie, and like his Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and, I believe, some of his other crime films (I haven't seen the rest) it relies on a lot of characters and twists-and-turns. What results is a good helping interesting moving parts, dialogue, and performances from great actors. The script isn't quite as tight as LS&TSB. The movie could've been a bit shorter. The character of a tabloid editor played by Eddie Marsan could've been cut without effecting anything. I also felt the last scene missed a bit of a punch. The previous criticisms are more nitpicks than major issues. Overall, this movie is a good time and I recommend it. It's not something you need to see immediately but should be given a shot. January 25, 2020 Format: Prime Video When Guy Ritchie began making gangster films with Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch he had a distinctive style that was highly entertaining. They featured memorable characters, great music, a bit of fun and crime. They showed that he could give his own original twist to those types of stories. Since then he’s gone onto a number of other films, but returned to the genre with The Gentlemen. Again, he wrote the script but dropped the ball with a highly inconsistent story that doesn’t really get going until the end. Things begin with Mickey Pearson (Matthew McConaughey) talking about how a lion has to be the lord of the jungle otherwise there would be chaos. That relates to the plot where he’s a major crime lord protecting his turf from all comers, friend and foe. The main characters however are actually his top henchman Raymond (Charlie Hunnam) and a reporter named Fletcher (Hugh Grant). Fletcher is trying to sell a story about Pearson’s various dealings for a small fortune. The problem is that things drag for most of the film. There’s just not enough drive to the story to keep it interesting. Yes there are gangsters, a bit of gunplay, and some backstabbing, but there’s nothing really special about it. It’s not until the end that things finally get going and there are some laughs thrown in as well. If Ritchie had done a better job with the pacing The Gentlemen would have been much better. That being said a shout out has to go to Colin Farrell as Coach who runs a boxing gym with a bunch of kids he’s trying to turn around from the streets who steals nearly every scene he’s in. January 31, 2020 Format: Prime Video Saw it in a theater. Fondly remembering "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels", I expected two hours of mindless pleasure leaving essentially no residue except for the feeling that it was fun, a bit like remembering a good party in which one gets a bit too drunk. Sadly enough I was disappointed. In this movie the action scenes are dispersed among longish dialogues and monologues that futilely try to imitate Tarentino. I found myself dosing! On top of it, despite the obviously expert handling of the violent action sequences, it is very difficult to describe the overall undercurrent as plot. In the last two decades films tend more and more to resemble passive computer games, where the speed and special effects totally obviate the need for coherent and semi-logical plot. Also, the cartoon treatment of the characters prevents any attempt on the side of the actors to demonstrate a more refined art of acting. I suppose I am getting too old for this genre of cinematography, still stuck in oldies like Chinatown, The Draughtsman's Contract, or the more recent Insomnia. No added value, alas.

Duration: 113 min Quality: TS Release: 2020 IMDb: 8. 2. Im not used to seeing Charlie be nice Im used to seeing sons of anarchy and him just kicking ass. Damon? Bale? Racing? The movie actually feels like they made it JUST FOR ME. The Gentleman Gangster is back to his poetic best.
After only one viewing I couldn't say definitively whether it's better than Snatch or Lock Stock n Two Smoking Barrels.
But The Gentlemen is certainly a whole lot of fun. Easily a 9/10.

Loved the twists of this movie. Guy Richie delivers again. Only negative comment is the used of the c u next Tuesday word throughout the movie. After watching the movie whenever Im driving I feel like im ken miles hahaha. Great movie! Gonna watch it again. ‘Thats MY WIFE. Their shoes are stunning. i'd like 3 pairs pls. Finally, Ritchie is back to what he does best: crime flicks. Went to a New Years day performance, best film of 2020 so far for me.
The film combined London gangsters, London Youth, wealthy aristocratic types and even asian gangsters seamlessly.
The pacing was outstanding, characters interesting and story competent.
Go and support this film. Salut KKomrade. As somebody from England, you are responsible, Grace, for actually making me want to seek out and watch a Guy Ritchie film...

However, his first day in Montfermeil twists in bad way when the owner of a circus and his men meet where drug-lord Le Maire ("The Mayor") claiming for a stolen baby lion a few hours ago, blaming him by the theft. Avoiding a fight between Le Maire and circus' owner, the three cops patrol the hood looking for the animal, learning that a troubled kid named Issa is the thief, who stolen to have it as pet. But when Ruiz, Chris and Gwada locate Issa to recover the baby lion, Issa's friends attempt to liberate him from the cops. With the situation out of control, Gwada shots a rubber ball just when Issa tried to escape and hits him in the face, just in the moment that all they realize that a drone of a boy named Buzz recorded all the incident. Patrolling around, Chris and Gwada locate Buzz and start a prosecution to catch him after to learn that drone's card is gone. Hiding in a downstairs, Buzz escapes from Chris and runs to ask refuge to Salah, a Kebab's owner and leader of the each time more powerful Muslim brotherhood in the hood. While Issa's friends run to advise Le Maire about the drone and the record, Ruiz, Chris and Gwada moves where Le Pince ("The Clamp"), a bar's owner in addition to Le Maire's rival and Chris' partner in business, looking for help, at the same time that Ruiz goes to a pharmacy to heal Issa's hurts. But when a confident alerts about Buzz's location, Le Maire, the cops and Le Pince meet at the same time at Salah's local claiming by the card, not measuring the consequences of their acts; 1hours 44 min.

"Les misérables" is a new French film that runs for 105 minutes and this one is among the biggest players this awards season from Europe. This includes consideration by the Cannes Film Festival, the Golden Globe Awards and the Oscars as well as many other award ceremonies. I loved Tom Hooper's take on the subject from a few years ago, but this one here has nothing in common with that one. Both deliver for different reasons. If you know the traditional "Les Misérables" a bit, you will find some parallels, but if eventually there is nothing that clicks for you except that brief conversation in the car about Victor Hugo, Gavroche and Cosette, then that is fine too. One example for me here really was the parallel between Gavroche and Issa, with violence against both kids really causing everything to fall apart in an endless abyss of destruction. There are differences of course too as Issa is really injured and in danger of being killed by a lion even on one occasion, but he lives. But first things first: This Oscar-nominated movie was written (with others) and directed by Ladj Ly and for him it is a really special project because he grew up exactly where this film takes place, which may be the key reason why it felt very authentic. Another reason is that this is his first full feature film ever and that makes it even more special how well-received this one turned out. And what I personally like a lot is that Ly recast exactly these actors that appeared in a short film with the same title that Ly made initially before he turned it into a full feature film. I never really like if they replace actors, especially if the original ones are certainly good enough for this to become a satisfying outcome. And that is certainly true here. All the actors did a good job, not only the ones at the very center, but also every supporting player really and also the many child actors you will find in here, some of them even playing key characters, most of all the one I mentioned earlier already, but also the boy with the drone for example.

Over the past 50 years I have read most of the works of Dickens Tolstoy and many other classic authors and can only say how much I have enjoyed my life because such men lived and posted their works to the improvement of the human family. First of all, I want to report a problem with the Kindle version of this book. After what amounts to several hundred pages of reading, there is a break in a sentence followed by the start of a new sentence. There are *years* of events missing in that small opening. So I went to my library and got a copy there. Interestingly, the library copy was abridged (only about 500 pages) and I couldn't easily find my place. The full version contains a lot of digressions and historical notes, all fascinating. Large, though. I ended up finishing the abridged version and I loved it. Seriously, one of the greatest books ever, and I don't say that lightly. If you're up for the full version, it's a commitment. Either way, it's worth it. Warning! reading Les Miserables will inevitably result in an extended intellectual endeavor to fully appreciate the scope, dramatic implications and historical import of this phenomenal work. For example, based upon Hugo's enrapturing depiction of the Battle of Waterloo, I spent many days studying additional historical accounts, so that I could more fully appreciate his prose. Abrams, Regisseur und Co-Autor von "Der Aufstieg Skywalkers", auch anderes machen im Abschlussteil der größten Filmreihe aller Zeiten? Wie sollte diese Geschichte, die mit einem kleinen Piloten namens Anakin Skywalker begann, ihm als Darth Vader ein schreckliches neues Leben schenkte, seine Kinder Luke und Leia zu den wichtigsten Kämpfern des Widerstands aufsteigen ließ, Enkel Ben Solo zur dunklen Seite der Macht führte und ihm schließlich die geheimnisvolle Jedi-Ritterin Rey als mächtigste Gegnerin in den Weg stellte - wie sollte diese Geschichte anders enden als im Überschwang? Was Abrams in Episode IX veranstaltet, ist deshalb überaus angemessen - und sieht von den wellenumtosten Ruinen des Todessterns bis zu epischen Gefechten im Weltall wirklich toll aus. Es ist in seiner grundlegenden Hilflosigkeit aber auch ehrlich. Denn außer Spektakel hatte die Sequel-Trilogie, die 2015 mit "Das Erwachen der Macht" ihren Anfang nahm, in den wenigsten Momenten etwas zu bieten, das ihre Existenz jenseits der Erschließung neuer Fan-Generationen gerechtfertigt hätte: Die Originaltrilogie von 1977 bis 1983 hatte keine Fährten in die Zukunft ausgelegt, sie war in ihrer wunderbaren, nachgerade eleganten Schlichtheit so auserzählt wie kaum eine Story sonst. Ein wenig eigener Glanz Darüber hinaus hatten die Episoden IV bis VI mit dem Figuren-Triumvirat aus Han, Luke und Leia allen Filmemachern, die an sie anschließen wollten, ein vergiftetes Geschenk gemacht. Denn einerseits konnten sie auf einer emotionalen Verbundenheit mit diesen Figuren aufbauen, die in der Filmgeschichte einzigartig ist. Andererseits band sie dieser Umstand auf Gedeih und Verderb an den berühmtesten Jedi-Ritter, die berühmteste Prinzessin und den berühmtesten Lederwestenträger des Kinos. Als Abrams Episode VII konzipierte, schien ihm das bewusst zu sein. Schließlich inszenierte er den Trilogieauftakt zu wesentlichen Teilen als Abfolge von Legenden-Cameos. Und Ridleys Rey blieb eigentlich nichts anderes zu tun, als entweder zu kämpfen, in Erwartung eines Kampfes scharf durch die Zähne zu atmen oder nach Beendigung eines Kampfes von Mitstreitern beherzt in den Arm genommen zu werden. Allein Adam Drivers Kylo Ren hatte sofort Statur. Das hätte bei dieser Familiengeschichte (Sohn von Leia und Han! ) und bei diesem Schauspieler (für "Marriage Story" wird Driver sicherlich bald zum zweiten Mal für den Oscar nominiert) nicht überraschen dürfen. Trotzdem schien die "Star Wars"-Truppe um Produzentin Kathleen Kennedy vom Potenzial dieser Figur verschreckt zu sein. Statt düsterer Emo-Jungs mit daddy issues wollten sie diesmal doch starke Frauen und People of Color im Mittelpunkt haben: Eine neue Hoffnung, jetzt noch mal neuer! Kein Entkommen vor diesem Erbe Diesen löblichen Impuls nahm Rian Johnson mit "Die letzten Jedi" auf. Seine Episode VIII war der überaus erfrischende Versuch, die "Star Wars"-Saga von ihrer Fixierung auf Herkunft zu lösen und vom Persönlichen ins Politische, vom Familienerbe zur Agenda zu überführen. Für sich genommen, gelang das dem Film: Als Kylo Ren Rey ins Gesicht sagte, ihre Eltern wären niemand gewesen, fühlte es sich an, als wären mehrere Zentner Erzählballast abgeworfen worden. Doch mit Freiheit können konservative Kräfte, zu denen Fans unbedingt gehören, nichts anfangen, weshalb "Die letzten Jedi" einen Backlash erlebte wie kein "Star Wars"-Film zuvor. Rebellen, so scheint es, mögen die lautesten Fans der Filmreihe nur als Fantasy-Figuren, nicht als Filmemacher. Und letztlich konnte auch Johnson nichts für die Profilierung des blassen Heldentrios um Rey herum tun. Die Bande untereinander waren einfach zu schwach, um ihrer Trennung in Episode VIII die Wucht zu verleihen, die "Das Imperium schlägt zurück" zum nach wie vor besten "Star Wars"-Film macht. Die rückblickend einzige Erkenntnis, die sich aus "Die letzten Jedi" und dem Fan-Aufstand gegen den Film ziehen ließ, war wohl: Vor dem Erbe von Han, Luke und Leia gibt es kein Entkommen. Im Video: Der Trailer zu "Der Aufstieg Skywalkers" In "Der Aufstieg Skywalkers" hat sich Abrams diese Erkenntnis nun zu Herzen genommen - und sie letztlich gelungen umgesetzt. Er eröffnet den Film zwar als einstündigen Fan-Service und stellt seine World-Building-Skills eindrucksvoll unter Beweis. Dann beginnt er jedoch, die Verbindungslinien zwischen den alten und neuen Hauptfiguren zu ziehen. Nicht jede davon ergibt Sinn, dennoch kommt zum Spektakel endlich die emotionale Tiefe dazu. Der Kampf zwischen Rey und Kylo Ren spitzt sich zu, und die Erzählung fokussiert sich beständig, bis das passiert, was der Titel die ganze Zeit versprochen hat: Der Aufstieg Skywalkers. Eine einzelne Person reist zum Schluss zu dem Planeten, den sie als ihre Wahlheimat erkoren hat. Und wie sie sich dort ins strahlende Gegenlicht der Sonne stellt, wird sie zum emphatischen Ausrufezeichen hinter eine Filmsaga, die 1977 begann. Nein, Quatsch, vor viel längerer Zeit. Star Wars 9: Was wird aus Leia nach Carrie Fishers Tod? Natürlich ist es noch viel zu früh für Informationen über die Handlung von Star Wars: Episode 9, immerhin steht noch der Release von Star Wars 8 an. Die Vorproduktion begann am 10. Februar 2016, die tatsächlichen Arbeiten am Film sollen 2017 anlaufen. Ursprünglich war der Drehstart für April 2017 angedacht. Durch den Tod von Carrie Fisher mussten die ersten Arbeiten jedoch verschoben werden. Leia sollte eine große Rolle in Episode 9 spielen, welche nun umgeschrieben werden. Wie sich einem Casting-Aufruf entnehmen lässt, wurde der Drehstart nun auf Juli verschoben. Die ersten Szenen sollen in Großbritannien gedreht werden. Zahlreiche Quellen berichteten von einer zentralen Rolle Leia Organas im neunten Star-Wars-Film. Nicht nur die Star-Wars-Fans wurden von der Nachricht über den Tod Carrie Fishers Ende 2016 geschockt. Noch ist unklar, inwiefern der Tod von Fisher in Star-Wars 9 aufgegriffen wird und in welchem Maße die Rolle von Leia Organa umgeschrieben werden muss. In „Rogue One“ wurde Grand Moff Tarkin auf digitalem Wege im Film dargestellt. Star Wars 9: Cast und Regie Noch bevor Episode 8 in den Kinos erscheint, sind die Arbeiten am neunten Teil natürlich in vollem Gange. Jack Thorne, der die Bühnenversion von „Harry Potter and the Cursed Child“ zu Papier gebracht hat, steht laut The Hollywood Reporte r vor der Aufgabe, das bereits vorhandene Drehbuch noch einmal grundlegend anzupassen. Derek Conolly und Colin Trevorrow lieferten die Vorlage. Trevorrow führt gleichzeitig Regie, musste sich für seine letzte Produktion „The Book of Henry“ jedoch viel Kritik anhören. Eine Überarbeitung des Drehbuchs ist dabei nichts ungewöhnliches, schließlich wurde auch bei „Das Erwachen der Macht“ und „Rogue One: A Star Wars Story“ nachträglich Hand angelegt. Star Wars 9: Release 2019 – Film ohne Carrie Fisher Tarkin hatte bereits in der klassischen Star-Wars-Trilogie einen Filmauftritt, der Schauspieler Peter Cushing verstarb jedoch 1994. Um nicht erklären zu müssen, wieso Tarkin plötzlich nicht mehr im Film ist, wurde Cushing in CGI-Form auf die Leinwand gebracht. Gut möglich, dass Carrie Fisher auf diesem Wege in Star Wars: Episode 9 integriert wird. Die Entscheidung hierüber lag auch bei der Tochter von Carrie Fisher, Billie Lourd. Lourd hatte in „Das Erwachen der Macht“ bereits selbst einen Auftritt als Lieutenant Connix. Inzwischen wurden Spekulationen von offizieller Seite zurückgewiesen. LucasFilm hat demnach keine Pläne, General Leia Organa in digitaler Form auf die Kinoleinwand zurückzubringen. Carrie Fisher wird also nicht als Leia im neuen Star-Wars-Film zu sehen sein. Star Wars: Episode IX mit Billie Lourd In Folge des Todes von Carrie Fisher gibt es Überlegungen, ihrer Tochter Billie Lourd eine größere Rolle im neunten Star-Wars-Film zu geben. Schon in Episode VII war sie als „Resistance Lieutenant“ Connix zu sehen. Ausgeschlossen ist es hingegen, Leia mit einer neuen Schauspielerin zu besetzen. Zu sehr sind Carrie Fisher und Leia Organa miteinander verknüpft, um hier eine würdige Nachfolgerin finden zu können. Star Wars: Episode VII und Rogue One sind jeweils im Dezember erschienen, auch Episode VIII soll im Winter in die Kinos kommen. Der Release von Star Wars 9 könnte allerdings aus diesem Rhythmus herausbrechen. Wie sich der Filmseite bei IMDb entnehmen lässt, wird dort der Kinostart des 2019 erscheinenden Star-Wars-Films bereits mit dem 24. Mai (USA) bzw. 23. Mai (Russland) angegeben. Gut möglich also, dass Fans nicht bis zum Jahresende warten müssen. Bereits die Filme aus der klassischen Trilogie erschienen jeweils zur warmen Jahreszeit. „Episode IV: Eine neue Hoffnung“ fand etwa am 25. Mai 1977 den Weg in die Lichtspielhäuser. Vor 1999 war ein «Star Wars»-Ranking einfach. Entweder liebte man das Ikonenhafte und Positive des Erstlings, oder man fühlte sich der dunkleren, erwartungszerstörerischen Reife von «The Empire Strikes Back» hinzugezogen. Oder man war ein Kind, weshalb man «Return of the Jedi» liebte wegen den Bärchen. Mehr Filme gab es nun einmal nicht. Doch dann folgten die, sagen wir mal, ‹problematischen› Prequels. Noch später dann die Filme der Disney-Ära... Und wo wird sich der Neue, «Rise of Skywalker», einordnen? «Star Wars – The Rise of Skywalker» – «Der Auftstieg Skywalkers» – kommt am 18. Bild: AP Nun, erstmal zu Ranking! ​ «Episode I – The Phantom Menace» (1999) Nun, der erste Film der Prequel-Trilogie wurde locker der erfolgreichste Film im Jahr 1999. Kein Wunder – das Franchise existierte bereits 22 Jahre, und hier war das lang ersehnte Comeback nach 16 Jahren. Leute, die mit der ursprünglichen Trilogie aufwuchsen, strömten in die Kinos und nahmen noch ihre Kinder mit. Doch eigentlich... halt, nein, nicht einmal eigentlich sondern kategorisch: Mann ist das ein Schlamassel! Der Plot ist kompliziert und undurchsichtig, die CGI aufsässig und omnipräsent, die Charaktere sowas von dünn geschrieben und... ach, Jar Jar Binks. «Episode II – Attack of the Clones» (2002) 2002 sah sich «Star Wars» erstmals mit der bitteren Realität konfrontiert, dass andere Blockbusters existierten, die in derselben Liga mitmischten («Lord of the Rings», «Harry Potter» und Co. ). Und wenn jene Filme halbwegs gut waren, hatte eine schmalzige Liebesromanze am Lago di Como eben das Nachsehen. Dabei sind die schlecht geschriebenen und noch schlechter gespielten Liebesszenen noch die einprägsamsten von «Attack of the Clones». Da war nämlich noch einiges an Action-Donnerwetter, das wir längst vergessen haben, da es sich grösstenteils zwischen zwei Droidenarmeen abspielt, was den Zuschauer ähnlich emotionell investiert wie zu Boden fallende Küchenutensilien. Ach ja – und das Duell zwischen Yoda und Count Dooku besteht hauptsächlich aus einem grünen CGI-Alien, der eine Reihe unnötiger Backflips vollzieht. «Episode III – Revenge of the Sith» (2005) «Revenge» ist der weitaus beste Streifen der Prequel-Trilogie – was freilich nicht allzu viel zu bedeuten hat. Palpatines Wandlung zum Bösewicht ist so was von voraussehbar, während Anakins Wandlung vom Jedi zum Sith schlicht einen besseren Darsteller vertragen würde. Dafür reitet Obi Wan Kenobi eine Riesenechse, was cool ist (not). «Episode VI – Return of the Jedi» (1983) Was die Original-Trilogie den anderen Filmen voraus hat, ist die Ikonografie. Denn obwohl «Return of the Jedi» am Ende ein ziemlich alberner Streifen ist, bietet er uns unvergessliche Momente mit Jabba the Hutt, den Sarlacc Pit, die Speeder-Bike-Verfolgungsjagd auf Endor und Princess Leia in einem Bikini. Hey, selbst die Ewoks machten nicht einmal eine so schlechte Falle als Teddybären-Vietcong. «Episode VIII – The Last Jedi» (2017) Schön, dass Mark Hamill derart in seiner Rolle als Grumpy Old Man aufgeht. Und schön, dass zwischen Rey und Kylo Ren (Alias Ben Swolo) eine derart intensive Chemie besteht. Schade nur, dass der Hauptplot lediglich darin besteht, zu warten, bis der Treibstoff ausgeht. Schade auch um die Milchkuh-Aliens auf der irischen Insel. Und die ganze Episode um das ausserirdische Monaco vergessen wir jetzt einfach mal, okay? «Solo: A Star Wars Story» (2018) Nach den Negativschlagzeilen betreffend Regisseurenentlassungen und dergleichen waren die Erwartungen tief. Doch ähnlich wie die Hauptfigur schafft «Solo» allen Widrigkeiten zum Trotz die Flucht nach vorne und entwickelt sich zu einem rabaukigen Spass mit einer gut bemessenen Prise Nostalgie. Die ‹Neuen› Alden Ehrenreich und Donald Glover spielen die ‹Alten› Han Solo und Lando Calrissian glaubwürdig; Schauspielern wie Woody Harrelson und Emilia Clarke schaut man immer gerne bei ihrem Handwerk zu. Doch es ist die grossartige Phoebe «Fleabag» Waller-Bridge, die als aufwieglerischer Droid L3-37 allen die Show stiehlt und so dem Film ein Sahnehäubchen aufsetzt. «Episode IV – A New Hope» (1977) Uuuuh – kontrovers! Der Ur-«Star Wars» nicht auf der Eins? Schweren Herzens muss man hier konstatieren: Dies ist nun mal nicht der beste «Star Wars»-Film. Bei weitem nicht. Und wäre dies nicht der allererste Film, wäre er gar viel weiter unten auf der Skala platziert. Das Drehbuch ist holprig, die Dialoge zum Teil hanebüchen und die Award-Zeremonie-Schlussszene schlicht peinlich. Aberrrrrrr... hey, die Einführung derart vieler ikonischer Figuren, Welten und Handlungsstränge lässt sich schlicht nicht wegdiskutieren. Dies ist unsere erste Begegnung mit Princess Leia, Darth Vader, Chewbacca, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Obi Wan Kenobi, C-3PO, R2-D2 und und UND. Selbst Nebenrollen wie Greedo gehören zu unser aller kollektivem Bewusstsein. Von der Titelsequenz mit der ikonischen Melodie über die Jazzband in der Mos Eisley Cantina bis zur Luftschlacht über dem Todesstern – diesen Film haben wir alle für immer in unsere Herzen geschlossen. «Rogue One: A Star Wars Story» (2016) Eigentlich wäre dies bloss eine kurze Überbrückungs-Episode, die einzig dazu da ist, dem Publikum zu erklären, wie die Rebellen an die Baupläne für den Todesstern ran kamen. Erstaulich, dass daraus einer der besten Filme der Serie wurde. Mads Mikkelsen und Forest Whitaker geben der Story die nötige Gravitas, die Rebellenbande um Diego Luna steuert Unterhaltung bei und Leading Lady Felicity Jones ist schlicht badass. Und am Schluss sterben alle und dann kommt Darth Vader und tötet gleich noch ein paar Leute mehr. Nichts da mit Friede-Freude-Ewok-Kuchen. «Episode VII – The Force Awakens» (2015) Bild: AP/Disney/Lucasfilm Ach, wie gross war doch der Aufschrei, als publik wurde, Disney hätte «Star Wars» gekauft! Garantiert würden die neuen Filme familienfreundlicher Kinderfilm-Bullshit werden! Verrat! Kommerz! Blödsinn. Als wäre Star Wars nicht schon seit je her Mainstream-Kommerz für den Stefanstag mit der Familie gewesen! Selbst der grösste «Star Wars»-Fan muss der unbequemen Wahrheit ins Auge blicken: George Lucas' Worldbuilding – die Welten und Figuren, die er mit seinem Star Wars-Universum geschaffen hat – mag genial sein, ein guter Geschichtenerzähler ist er deswegen noch lange nicht. In dem man George Lucas die künstlerische Leitung wegnahm, konnte man endlich Filme mit halbwegs stringentem Narrativ und kohärenten Dialogen machen. J. Abrams macht genau dies und noch viel mehr mit «The Force Awakens». Lustvoll bedient er sich an allem, was wir an der Original-Trilogie lieben: Da sind die Tie-Fighters und die X-Wings, der Millenium Falcon, die Droiden, die Sturmtruppen und – hach! – Han Solo, Chewie und Leia! Zudem sind die Nazis der First Order Filmbösewichte erster Güte. Und wie grossartig sind Daisy Ridley und John Boyega?! Fehlt nur noch, dass Luke Skywalker ein Comeback feiert... ach, da ist er ja! «Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back» (1980) Bild: AP Auch der Topspot gehört einem Film, bei dem nicht von George Lucas Regie geführt wurde. Nicht ohne Grund gilt «The Empire Strikes Back» von Regie-Veteran Irvin Kershner gemeinhin als bester «Star Wars»-Film aller Zeiten. Während «A New Hope» uns das «Star Wars»-Universum vorstellt, baut «Empire» darauf auf und führt das Publikum viel, viel weiter. Hier wird man vom verschneiten Eisplaneten Hoth zum Regenwald von Dagobah geführt und danach weiter in die Wolkenstadt auf Bespin. Legendäre Charaktere wie Yoda und Lando Calrissian werden vorgestellt, zwischen Leia und Han entwickelt sich eine Romanze, und ist nicht jene AT-AT-Schlacht auf der Eiswüste einer der grossartigsten Momente der Filmgeschichte? Und, hey, Darth Vader entpuppt sich am Ende als Lukes Vater. Genial. Und? Einverstanden? Gewiss nicht. Deshalb dürft ihr hier selbst bestimmen: Wählt den besten «Star Wars»-Film EVER! Jubelt!
