Pagieza Watch full length. Went to see 'Grudge' today because I am a fan of the series and I've said to give this new one a chance. Bad decision.
In spite of the Red Band trailer that offered us a good peek, the movie itself is a total mess. I understood the Nicolas Pesce's vision on this new project, but I feel that they did not manage to arrange things properly.
The acting is awful - they do not manage to share their emotions to the public and it is easily remarkable how they do not feel involved in the story (especially William Sadler.
The story has a lot of plot holes. Some events remain a question that will never get answered. The chronological order is also disorderly, jumping from the present to the past, from the past to another past, from the other past to the present and so on. I remember that the first remake also approached the same technique and was not well received, but it was simpler than this one. You will also encounter some boring dialogues and actions that lead to nowhere.
Although it is R-rated, I can not say I felt it. There are some good jump scares that managed to freak people in the cinema, however the scenes were not brutal or disgusting. The images and the visual effects were nice, but not extraordinary.
Some of the Grudge fans will notice some Easter Eggs (both from Ju-On and the first American remake) that were nice to be there, thus some scenes are a faithful copy approached with a different perspective. I will try to not spoil so much but I should warn you: Should you see the movie, do not expect a different ending from the first American remake. It is almost the same.
I rated it 4/10 for the visual effects, jump scares and the courage to develop a new story included in the same Universe. I would have given more if only the story and the characters were emphasised.

This movie is an example of why American filmmakers need to stop adapting foreign horror movies and come up with their own stuff. First off.. why do ALL the spirits In this movie make that death rattle noise? With kayako it’s at least explained she was murdered by having her neck/throat crushed. But all the spirits in this film do it just because. Predictable jump scares at every corner, terrible script, and the timeline jumps all over the place leaving you scratching your head. Best part of the whole movie is 10 seconds of the opening scene with kayako, her only appearance. Also don’t get why this movie is R rated. I love the original series of movies and was feeling proactively accepting of deviations from the original since I thought this was a remake. Except, it wasn't really a remake. It was (sort of? ) a sequel? This was unexpected. The movie, in a word, was disappointing. It tried to do too much, made the storyline unnecessarily complicated, and never really delivered on the plot points they set up. There were a couple jump scares that got me even though I saw them coming. And that's another thing about it; they telegraphed what was coming pretty much every time. Individual parts were fine, but, somehow, the movie just didn't land. It was missing that je ne sais quoi that makes a movie great. Lots of great actors are in the movie but their talents were underutilized. It was ok. I don't feel like I wasted an hour and a half of my life but I do feel uncomfortably underwhelmed. If you're a fan of the series I guess you have to see it anyway. If you aren't familiar with the series, however, don't start here.
